Three individuals suspected of belonging to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) were arrested on Thursday morning in Fez by the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ), reported Moroccan daily newspaper Assabah on Friday.
The arrest of the three suspects came following vigilant investigation revealing the suspects affiliation with a group of ISIS leaders in Syria and Iraq.
The operation started at 7:30 AM on Thursday. One of the suspects, a minor, was arrested in Hay Al Massira Bensouda, the neighborhood where he lives with his family.
The second accused is a 41-year-old fruit and vegetable seller, living in Hay Zouagha. The third, considered the coordinator, is a 28-year-old security guard.
The BCIJ searched in their homes in an attempt to find evidence that they belonged to ISIS, according to the source, which added that telephones, books and computers were seized at the behest of the General Prosecutor’s Office.
The suspects have been referred to the BCIJ’s headquarters being appearing at Fez’s tribunal court.
Assabah noted several operations arresting Moroccans linked to ISIS have been conducted in the region of Fez.
Over the past few years, Morocco has dismantled numerous cells had been planning to carry out terrorist attacks across the Kingdom.
Abdelhak El Khiyame, Head of BCIJ, announced in December 2016, that his agency had managed to thwart 341 terrorist attacks over the past 14 years. He noted that since 2002, the BCIJ had dismantled 167 cells, including 46 belonging to ISIS. 2,963 suspected terrorists, 277 of whom already had criminal records, had been arrested and referred to the judiciary courts.
